Nippon Maru  II, Kaiwo Maru  II

The Kaiwo Maru  II was built in 1989, replacing the former Kaiwo Maru which was engaged in training of merchant marine cadets for over half a century.

HISTORY

The Kaiwo Maru  II was built in 1989, replacing the former Kaiwo Maru which was engaged in training of merchant marine cadets for over half a century.

The former Kaiwo Maru was built in 1930 as a sister ship of Nippon Maru II, and brought up 11,425 trainees for a little more than 54 years to retirement, completing about 1,950,000km voyage (49 rounds of the earth).

Although the former Kaiwo Maru had continued the brilliant voyage, after 1974 with superannuation, it reduced the scale of ocean navigation, continuing the temporary voyage.

Conventionally, the sail training ship was built by the country and has been used only for educational training of merchant marine cadets.

However, to use also for the classroom on the sea and an experience voyage for general youth with educational training of merchant marine cadets, training ship education support association built The Kaiwo Maru  II by using National subsidy, subsidy from Nippon foundation, donation and bank loans.

The fixed plans of construction were as follows.

It shall have a fine sight as a sailing ship, and shall be dignified.
In consideration of years of operation, it had a fine sight as it was strong, and it considers as an easy structure of maintenance.
In consideration of the use of Kaiwo Maru  II, it considers as the passenger ship engaged in an international voyage. Moreover, it has educational equipment required for the training and the sea training to general youth, especially for training adaptability, discipline, a sense of cooperation, and international mindedness that were indispensable elements for ship's officers.
It took into consideration of a comfortable environment and living space on the ship in which people enable to live healthfully as much as possible.
By an improvement based on the construction technology and operation experience which were obtained from the Nippon Maru  II, Kaiwo Maru  II was improved in consideration of subsequent technical innovation.
The schedule from planning to complete the construction was as follows.

8th JULY 1988 :Keel was laid at Sumitomo Heavy Industries, Ltd.
17th SEPT. 1988 :Block loading was started..
19th JAN. 1988 : The first mast (a jigger mast, mast at the tail end) was mounted.
7th MAR. 1989 : Launching ceremony was celebrated in the presence of the Minister of Transport.
9th SEPT. 1989 : Construction was completed and it was handed over. The first trainee was accepted and the maiden voyage was started.
The sailing performance of The Kaiwo Maru  II was more wonderfully higher than the former Kaiwo Maru.

It was awarded several times with The Boston Tea Pot Trophy.
